One of Italy’s finest spots in the dolomites is Val Di Funes. Its magical pointy tops, among rolling green mountain lands, is a sight you’d have to double blink on: to make sure it’s not a dream!

In this post, I’ll tell you all about my quiet visit to this fairytale place.

First off, words can not describe the flair of these Dolomites. Pictures can try to capture its majestic powers, but it’s not until you’re there that it hits you and you fall under its spell.

It was an absolute beaut of a day. However, as you might have noticed, quite cloudy over the main attraction.

Crazy as it sounds, nature kept sending all its clouds to cover these peaks. My husband and I climbed high to sit back and watch, hoping the clouds would move and display the show we were waiting for.

It almost happened and was close to clear right before dark.

 But, in all honesty, the cloud movement added to the excitement and overall experience. Because every time we saw the Funes escape the white curtain, we’d freak out!

What you need to know about Val Di Funes

Even though this place is inside Italian boarders, it’s very close to Austria. I would consider it countryside, with a local population, where most people speak German and/or Italian. However, you’ll come across some English speakers.

This destination is very peaceful and quiet, consisting of some tourist, but mostly locals and hikers.

How to get there:

There’s a local bus system, and some hotels have transportation to the nearest train station.

We drove a car, which worked best for us.

Where to stay:

I would recommend staying in Santa Maddalena. This town is the closest to the Funes. Our room had a balcony, which I would lounge on and glare into the direction of glory.

It was amazing!!!

Santa Maddalena also provides the easiest access to all the major viewpoints by walking.

Our apartment (Apartment Garni Sonia) was clean and offered breakfast. However, it did not have dinner (unlike most other hotels).

Where to eat:

There aren’t many places to eat in Santa Maddalena. In fact, besides having breakfast at our hotel, we didn’t eat there at all. Instead, we drove to nearby towns for lunch and dinner.

It would be easier to book a hotel that includes both breakfast and dinner. However, if you don’t (like us) just make sure you go to dinner before 8pm.
