If you’re in Shanghai, I highly recommend venturing away from the city and visiting Zhujiajiao, an ancient Chinese water town.
The morning was misty and cool as we strutted down sidewalks along the Venice-like canals,
where boats rule as the main transportation system and tourist attraction.
Lucky for us, this January day wasn’t jammed with outsiders,
which brought an insight to local living and atmosphere.
We took a romantic ride along the multipurpose canals in Zhujiajiao
and enjoyed some beautiful, over 1700 years old, views.
Let’s not forget about the food.
We ran into some of our friends on the same tour as us in a local restaurant.
They stated we had to get the dumplings,
so we did
Absolutely delicious!
Also, there was this soup dumpling where you had to stick a straw into it to drink the crab flavored broth.
Not only was it tasty, it was an unique experience.
The shops were super cheap too!!
Real pearls anyone?
Seriously, save all your money from shopping in Shanghai and shop here.
Our tour guide told us that the reason it was cheaper than the city was because the water village isn’t as highly taxed.
Zhujiajiao: An Ancient Chinese Water Town
Overall, Zhujiajiao is a lovely place.
It’s where I shot some of my favorite pictures of China.
Only about an hour bus ride from Shanghai, it’s known as one of the most popular water villages to visit.
What an amazing opportunity! It’s absolutely gorgeous!! I love seeing all the pictures and reading stories of your travels! One day maybe I could take a trip lille that with my family too! Safe travels to yall!

This is nice! Shanghai doesn’t really appeal to me but if I ever end up there, I’d definitely come here and probably choose to stay here for a few days as well if there’s an option for that. Such a beautiful & photogenic water town! Thanks for sharing this!

I’ll be the first to admit I don’t know much about China besides the great wall, but I had no idea there was a water village so close to Shanghai! It looks absolutely lovely, glad to have Zhujiajiao on my radar now.
wow, it looks so beautiful and atmospheric – I’ve had soup dumplings before but never tried to eat them with a straw – I’ve always been told to put them in a spoon and try to eat them in one go!
